Liewe vriende,
Op
enige oomblik Zuma kon die geheimhouding Bill teken in die wet - een
van die ergste aanval op die demokrasie en vryheid van spraak sedert
Apartheid. Maar ons kan hom dwing om te gee die howe 'n finale sê, spaar ons vryheid van spraak regte van die ergste dele van die wet.
Die
President het die mag omstrede wetsontwerpe te stuur na die
Konstitusionele Hof voordat hulle verorden om seker te maak dat hulle
nie in stryd met ons mees kosbare vryheid. Maar
hy gaan net die geheimhouding Bill se korrupte beskerming te vertraag
vir sy eie regering indien daar is 'n massiewe landswye protes. Ons het net dae om seker te maak hy dit hoor.

Die geheimhouding Bill sou slegte nuus vir Suid-Afrika wees. Regtig sleg is. Onder
dit, elkeen wat na uitgelek geklassifiseerde lêers (soos joernaliste op
die regering oorplanting of alledaagse burgers toegang tot hulle aanlyn
- iemand) kon kry tot 25 jaar in die tronk, ongeag van hoe belangrik
die storie is vir die publiek. Die
wetsontwerp wat geslaag het ingesluit belangrike veranderings is nie,
maar hulle val ver te kort van wat nodig is: te veel amptenare nog
steeds het die mag om unaccountably klassifiseer dokumente, en die
vrystelling bygevoeg vir fluitjieblasers het 'n groot leemte wat maak
dit al, maar nutteloos in die praktyk. Geheel en al, sou die wet 'n groot padblokkade in ons vermoë om te ontbloot en te ondersoek korrupsie in die regering wees.
Burgers kan die geheimhouding Bill bring na die hof nadat dit verby is, maar die proses neem 'n lang tyd en kon miljoene kos. Net so is, baie regskenners sê dat die wet duidelik mooi stryd is met ons vryheid van spraak regte. Zuma
het die kans om die Grondwet gee die respek wat dit verdien en het die
hof hersiening van die wetsontwerp voor dit wet en begin doen skade.

Wanneer

het om te stem in 2011, Avaaz lede het by die nasionale oproep om
vryheid oor geheimhouding, saam met die diverse organisasies agter die
Right Campaign te leer ken. Nou het ons 'n kans om te stap in weer en hou die druk op Zuma se aanval op ons demokrasie.

Dear friends,
At any moment Zuma could sign the Secrecy Bill into law -- one of the worst attacks on democracy and free speech since Apartheid. But we can force him to give the courts a final say, saving our free speech rights from the worst parts of the law.
The President has the power to send controversial bills to the Constitutional Court before they are enacted to make sure they don't violate our most precious freedoms. But he's only going to delay the Secrecy Bill's corrupt protections for his own government if there's a massive nation-wide outcry. We only have days to make sure he hears it.
He's already feeling the heat, but the bill could be signed any day now. Click below to call on Zuma to protect our constitution and follow the law. Then forward this email to everyone:

The Secrecy Bill would be bad news for South Africa. Really bad. Under it, anyone who looks at leaked classified files (like journalists reporting on government graft or everyday citizens accessing them online -- anyone!) could get up to 25 years in jail, regardless of how important the story is to the public. The bill that passed included important revisions, but they fall far short of what's needed: far too many officials still have the power to unaccountably classify documents, and the exemption added for whistleblowers has a major loophole that could make it all but useless in practice. Altogether, the law would be a major roadblock in our ability to uncover and investigate government corruption.
Citizens can bring the Secrecy Bill to court after it's passed, but the process takes a long time and could cost millions. Even so, many legal experts say that the law pretty clearly violates our free speech rights. Zuma has the chance to give the constitution the respect it deserves and have the court review the bill before it becomes law and starts doing damage.
