The flag was designed by Dirk van der Hoff and was used for the first time on January 6, 1857, in Potchefstroom, and then, on February 23, in Pretoria. On 18 February, 1958, the Parliament of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek (literally: “South African Republic”, Boer Republic in the region of the Transvaal) adopted it as State flag.
The Boer Republic of the Transvaal was founded in 1852 and gained independence in 1856. It lost his freedom in 1877 and regained in 1881, with the victory of the Boers in the First War of Liberation.
In the 1900 the ZAR was annexed to the British Empire. It was officially abolished at the end of the Second War of Liberation, with the Treaty of Vereeniging on the 31 May 1902, which ended the Boer Republics.
